About Edit

Capoeira is the culmination of African inspired traditions which include art, dance, fight, music, oration, instrumentation, and community.   Capoeira is only one of the many gifts that were brought to colonial Brazil in spite of the wretched circumstances of its rendering.  African people with different languages and customs recreated an uncertain identity and a bond through Capoeira.  Capoeira is a martial art that looks very much like a dance.   The dance like movements cleverly disguise the violent undertones of the exercise.  Since, Capoeira in its most raw form was used to escape oppression, it was illegal for many years.  In those days, any form of self expression, whether in self defense or playing the drum, was considered an offense against the state.  Whether physically or mentally, those who practice(d) Capoeira are able to leave their sorrows behind, if just for a little while.  This happens most instantly when the Berimbau (the main percussion instrument) begins, a "chula" is bellowed, and two Capoeiristas are called to begin their eloquent sway to ginga.  Ginga Swag!
